Keeping Her Fed for Fall

Fall calving presents unique nutritional challenges and opportunities for beef producers. Unlike spring or winter calving systems, fall calving typically provides cows with better forage availability during late gestation, leading to a more ideal body condition at calving. But meeting the increasing energy and protein demands leading up to calving requires careful planning. Focusing on body condition score, forage quality, and timely nutrition can make all the difference in the herd’s reproductive success and individual animal performance.
Late Gestation Shifts
The most nutritionally demanding periods of a cow’s annual cycle or the last trimester of gestation and first 60 days of lactation. The former is when most of the fetal growth occurs, and the latter is when the cow’s nutrient requirements are the highest. According to Eric Bailey, University of Missouri Extension beef nutrition specialist, a calf doubles in size during the last trimester, increasing the cow’s need for energy and protein.
“Cows in Missouri do well with total digestible nutrients (TDN) of 55% and 7% crude protein through mid-gestation. Their nutritional needs increase to 60% TDN and 9% protein in late gestation, or 90-days before calving,” Bailey said. “However, with peak lactation occurring around 60 days after calving, cows’ protein requirements rise to around 11% to support milk production and maintain their reserves.”
Kacie McCarthy, University of Nebraska Extension beef specialist, said inadequate energy intake during early lactation increases the risk of body condition loss, delays return to estrus, and reduces reproductive performance.
Bailey said that fall calving often matches well with cool-season forage systems in Missouri. Because forage quality and quantity peaks in the spring, cows in fall herds usually build up body condition in late spring and summer, entering fall in decent condition. But in winter, there is a shift.
“When you think about moving from fall into winter, nutrients available in most of our forages begin to decline,” McCarthy said. Weather also plays a role in nutritional demand. “Cold temperatures, particularly when combined with wind or moisture, increase maintenance requirements, further elevating energy needs. In these environments, energy is your key driver for adequate nutrition,” she said.
Protein concentrations in dormant forage often decline more gradually. “Most typically, our good quality native Nebraska pastures are going to hold that crude protein fairly well during the dormant season, but may be below that typical 7% crude protein that you want to target,” McCarthy said.
Evaluating Body Condition
A cow’s body condition score (BCS) provides a visual assessment of a cow’s nutritional resources. McCarthy explained that cows entering late gestation with a good BCS ensures those females have enough fat cover to house nutrient reserves they can draw from should they need additional resources. BCS is one of the most reliable indicators of whether a cow’s diet is meeting her needs. But late gestation calf growth can also cause producers to overestimate the cow’s condition.
“Maintaining body condition so they’ve got good fat cover over the ribs and over the tail head is a good indicator of what we want headed into late gestation and calving. Better yet is actually getting your hands on those cows to gauge if you’re looking at hair fluff and gut fill, versus actual fat deposition on the body,” McCarthy said. She also pointed out that better body condition improves colostrum quality.
Both Bailey and McCarthy stressed producers should aim for a BCS of 5 at calving for mature cows and 6 for first-calf heifers. “We estimate their weight and flesh based on a 1 to 9 scale, with 5 being neither fat nor thin,” Bailey said. “The body condition score of a cow going into calving is a very important benchmark for how she’ll perform reproductively going forward.” Fall–calving cows that maintained adequate BCS through late gestation and into lactation are more likely to resume estrous cycles quickly, rebreed efficiently, and maintain consistent calving intervals year-to-year.
Forage Quality Concerns
A common challenge for fall calving operations is the seasonal decline in forage quality after peak summer growth. Once cool-season grasses mature, energy and protein levels drop, especially in late fall and winter.
Stored forages, especially older hay stored outside, can fall below 50% TDN, which isn’t sufficient to meet a cow’s nutritional demands even when she is open. “Cows wouldn’t be able to consume enough low-quality hay to maintain themselves,” Bailey said.
“Testing forages is one of the simplest and most beneficial practices, yet it’s one of the most underutilized tools available,” Bailey said. “We’ve been talking about hay testing for 50 years, but the adoption rate of regular hay testing is still laughably low, unfortunately.”
Plan Ahead for Supplementing
Any extra nutrients cows consume while lactating go toward milk production. Assessing cow condition and adding supplements before calving are the only ways to boost a bred cow’s condition. Assessing body condition in mid-summer, around early July, is ideal. “You’re probably not going to move the needle a whole lot if you realize cows are thin within the last 30 days before they calve,” Bailey said. “Ideally, you’d be identifying body condition score deficiencies 60 to 90 days before calving so that there is ample time to put weight on any thin cows.”
Producers have options to lessen nutritional demands on cows, such as reducing environmental stresses, creep feeding calves, and early weaning.
Heat stress before fall calving, cold stress during winter lactation, and mud-related stress all decrease nutritional efficiency. “Making sure we’re reducing heat stress if possible is important, as is providing windbreaks and shelter when needed,” McCarthy said. She also pointed out that selecting sites that support cow performance by minimizing unnecessary energy expenditure will lower nutrient requirements.
“Another option is creep feeding those calves, which can take some of that lactational stress off our cows,” McCarthy said. She explained that early weaning is another option, as it removes the lactational demand, potentially improving a cow’s body condition.
Not only does nutrition affect cows and calves, it’s an often overlooked factor influencing bull performance. “Bulls are purchased in excellent condition, often over-conditioned for commercial cattle production,” Bailey said. “We expect them to do their one job, breed cows, but with half rations compared to what they’re accustomed to. Producers might need to supplement bulls, making sure they don’t come home, lose 200 pounds, and then are expected to breed 30 cows.”
Putting It All Together
There are several keys to success when it comes to the nutrition of fall calving herds:
- Maintain Adequate Body Condition – Target a BCS at calving of 5 for mature cows and 6 for first-calf heifers.
- Understand Forage Quality and Limits – Pasture quality can decline, and stored hay often doesn’t meet energy demands.
- Test Forages and Plan Supplements – Don’t assume your hay quality alone will meet the nutritional needs of fall calving and lactating cows. Test forages and develop supplementation to address energy and protein shortfalls.
- Intervene Early – Assess cow condition well before calving and adjust diets early.
- Fertility Impacted by Nutrition – Nutrition directly affects all members of the herd and ultimately reproductive success for the following year.
Ultimately, nutrition for fall calving cows and heifers requires a year-round approach. Producers who understand the seasonal changes in forage quality, monitor body condition, and respond with timely, targeted nutrition strategies see better calf performance, improved rebreeding rates, and healthier herds.
